Careful, this is partially NSFW. 94 epic pages dedicated to top models with 16 (!) cover girls: British fashion magazine i-D asks who are the fashion world’s leading role models. And the magazine’s fall 2012 issue is cult already with photography of the finest and 16 (!) different covers. That’s right, for each cover girl an issue. Pure eye candy.
Inspired by the likes of Frida Kahlo and Marilyn Monroe, the magazine founded in 1980 by former Vogue art director Terry Jones asks, “What makes a role model?” And they answer the question with a feast for the eyes.
It’s an especially interesting question considering the fact that you wouldn’t expect to hear this question in the fashion industry.
Throughout history, says i-D philosophically, we’ve always admired strong women who have followed their own paths and been unafraid to grab hold of life with both hands. Even and especially models.
So meet the world’s most iconic role model supermodels and even hotter clothes: Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymour, Guinevere van Seenus, Kristen McMenamy, Karen Elson, Isabeli Fontana, Natasha Poly, Amber Valletta and Gisele Bündchen all make an all-star appearance.
But there’s no model without the photographer. So meet as well the work of star photographers such as Emma Summerton, Daniele Duella + Iango Henzi and others, such as Chinese photographer Chen Man who introduces a Chinese role model. Furthermore, legendary photographer Tim Walker reflects on his career behind the lens.
So anyways, what’s a role model? Writes the magazine:
Someone who has led a life even more explosive than mine, a person whose exaggerated fame or notoriety has made him or her somehow smarter and more glamorous than me. An inspirational man or woman is anyone who has achieved the right balance between their personal and professional lives.
Having a role model gives you a concrete image of who you want to become. They lead by example to help you become the very best person you can. Very often role models and elegance go hand in hand. Elegance, just like being inspirational, is innate. It’s not something you can buy. But it’s definitely something you can aspire to be.
And there’s none of it, in the fashion world, without… photography.
Reminds us why the word supermodel was created in the first place.
And what’s that thing with the right eyes closed on the cover shots?
